About Deb Shapiro, Psychotherapist, LCSW-R, CH

My Background

I am a psychotherapist and licensed clinical social worker.  I have treated adults, adolescents, couples and families for 15 years in New York, Massachusetts and Minnesota.  I also am a hypnotist and offer hypnotherapy to treat a wide variety of problems when--and only when--clients request it.

I received my Masters of Social Work degree in 2002 from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota.  I have worked in outpatient mental health clinics, a day treatment center for seriously mentally ill adults and a partial hospitalization program for acutely mentally ill adolescents.  I also performed crisis counseling  for youth who had run away from home, and with the general public.  I have worked in the mental health field for over 20 years.

My therapuetic approach and style

My clients tell me they feel safe, relaxed and free to say whatever they feel and think with me.  I offer compassion, patience, empathy and respect to all.  I understand the vulnerability of being a client in therapy and relate on a very human level.  I am knowledgeable about many problems and paths to healing, yet I seek to help you turn to your own self-knowledge and deepen it.

In psychotherapy I apply psychodynamic,  cognitive-behavioral, and body sensory approaches, depending on my clients' individual personalities and problems. Therapy helps people heal when the therapist develops caring, authentic relationships with them that accurately address their specific needs.  I work to understand how past experiences have brought you to your current situation so together we learn about the sources of your distress.  I can guide you in finding new strength in yourself and enjoyment in your relationships and work.

Art therapy, and experience with other non-traditional forms of therapy, strongly informs my work.  I offer my knowledge, support and love of these alternatives to traditional psychotherapy to clients as appropriate for them.  I offer hypnosis in addition, to improve the success rate for interested clients.  Hypnosis is a highly effective but widely misunderstood tool to achieve one's goals.  Please read my HYPNOSIS PAGE for information about this very safe, simple method.

"When I began therapy with Deb a year and a half ago I could barely get out of bed and was discouraged with my job search.  Our weekly sessions have helped me to overcome self-defeating thinking patterns and to attain my goal of starting my own business.

She is a gifted therapist and approaches problems from different angles.  Her calm, zen-like demeanor and brilliant feedback helps me discover and move through what's blocking me.  I look forward to our sessions every week and would highly recommend her."

Debbie is a great listener; she listens attentively to what you say, which means she values and respects you.  She encourages you to express yourself either by talking, shouting, crying, or sometimes by just venting your problems out of your chest; and she always handles your concerns in a professional and respectful manner.  I highly recommend Debbie Shapiro”.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can therapy help me? You don't even know me!

By listening to your problems and how you approach them, as well as your background and how you dealt with them in the past, I can help you find ways to improve your situation.

I don't think anyone can understand how I feel. What's the point of therapy?

You are a unique individual, with your own personality, absolutely! You also share the same emotions of fear, anger, sadness, joy and confusion that other humans feel.  It can be so hard to bear painful feelings without knowing how to address them and  how to meet your needs.  I really can help with most problems.

Can you really solve my problems?

I cannot live your life or be in your skin, but I have a great capacity for empathy and an ability to guide people in resolving unhealthy ways of thinking and behaving.   I can help you see your challenges and opportunities from new angles and find your strengths and answers.  You will be surprised how much you know and can do.

How long will it take for me to work with you?

We all have different backgrounds, needs, abilities and rates of working through problems.  Psychotherapy may be very brief--2 months--or longer, maybe even a few years.  But if you are dedicated to your own growth and consistent in working toward reaching your goals, your chances of quick progress are good.

Do you take insurance?

I am happy to work with you to submit an out-of-network claim so your insurance company can reimburse you for my services.  I do not work directly with insurance companies at this time. I do offer therapy in 15-minute segments. I recommend 45-minute sessions but you may also request a shorter session to lower your costs.
